BASE History
1978
A Boise Cascade employee and a small group of volunteers began teaching adaptive skiing lessons in 1978 at Bogus Basin under the name Recreation Unlimited.
Early history
With the help of K2, Recreation Unlimited enrolled nine students in 1978, eight of whom were amputees. After a few years, the program added instruction for sit-skiers, allowing those with significant mobility challenges to enjoy the slopes. Recreation Unlimited also began teaching lessons to snowboarders and wounded warriors.
2018
Recreation Unlimited officially changed their name to Boise Adaptive Snowsport Education to more accurately reflect its role in the promotion of snowsport education for all individuals.
today
The program serves a wide range of diverse-ability individuals. Working with the Bogus Basin ski school, the program is here to serve anyone who is unable to participate in the traditional ski school program offered by Bogus Basin.
The program has grown from the initial nine students and handful of instructors to 160 students and 100 instructors who hit the slopes for 480 adaptive teaching sessions each year.
